- On the home page:
- Front and center, there are reviews of ARLO by prominent animal advocates next to a short blurb describing ARLO’s purpose and function.
- If you scroll down below the reviews and blurb, you can see three columns. On the far left are the latest ARLO updates on Twitter. You can click the “Follow @rise_arlo” button to follow ARLO on Twitter. In the center is a list of the current top ten most viewed records on ARLO. On the far right is a list of recently uploaded records from ARLO.
- If you know the name of a specific entity or geographic region you’re looking for, you can search for either/both at the top of the home page. Above the yellow ARLO title, you will see a search bar with a bright blue search button. You can enter the name of a specific entity in the “Enter name of lab…” search bar or the town, city, or state of your choice in the “Enter a location…” search bar. Once you have filled out your desired search terms, click the blue search button to see the results.
- By clicking “Browse Labs” underneath the “Home” link on the far left side of the home page, you can conduct a search. If the “Labs” box is checked underneath the search bar (it will be green if it has been checked), then you can search for specific entities, geographic regions, and sectors. If you would rather search for specific records, you can click on the “Records” tab. Once the “Records” tab is green, you can search key terms in the search bar to find the kinds of records you are looking for.
- Navigate the local map at the top of the page to see exactly where the entity is located.
- Find out how many Animal Welfare Act (AWA) protected animals the entity used in different years. If ARLO contains records from more than one year for the specific entity, you can see the yearly fluctuation in the quantity of AWA protected animals used. In the “Animals Used (AWA Only)” section, you can directly compare the number of animals used per year, or look for the green and red percentages next to each documented year that represents the increase or decrease of the total number of AWA protected animals used from the year prior. By clicking on the “More >” tab at the far right of “Animals Used (AWA Only)” section, two charts will appear: 1) the total trend of AWA protected animals used, and 2) the trends of use regarding specific AWA protected species. You can narrow the information presented on each chart by clicking on “Pain categories” underneath the chart titles and selecting a specific USDA pain designation.
- Read through and download individual government documents detailing the entity’s operations, for example, annual reports to government agencies.
- On the left-hand side of the entity page, you will see a list of tab options: overview, animals used, records, media, lab details, experiments, and action center. By clicking on “Animals Used” and scrolling to the bottom of the screen, you will see an area called “Source Data.” In this section, you can search for key terms, specific species, and pain categories to determine how many animals of a specific species were used for experiments of a specific category in a given year.
- If you click on “Records” on the left-hand side of the entity page, you will see a search bar where you can search for key terms and specific record types (e.g. grant documents or inspection reports). After selecting your search terms, you can view and download specific records that fit within your given criteria. If you scroll down to the bottom of the page, you can learn more about the laws impacting the entity at hand. You can learn whether the lab is subject to its state open records law or the federal Freedom of Information Act, two central legal mechanisms Rise for Animals relies on to obtain records. Other relevant laws the entity must follow are also listed, for example, anti-cruelty laws or post-research adoption laws. By clicking “View more >” underneath each law listed, you can read the law itself on a third party website.
- Underneath the “Records” section on the main entity page, there is a section called “Species Used (AWA Only).” This section includes a pie chart containing the number of each AWA protected species used, and the respective percentage that species makes up in the total number of AWA protected animals the entity uses. By clicking on the downwards arrow next to the year listed under the title “Species Used (AWA Only),” you can generate the pie chart data for a different year or for all of the years ARLO has information on the entity.
- By clicking “Media” on the left-hand side of the entity page, you can find:
- Whether or not local or national media sources have reported on the entity. In the “Existing Media Stories” section, you can click on the links to read about how the entity has previously been reported on.

- By clicking “Action Center” on the left-hand side of the entity page, you can seize the opportunity to write a letter to the entity by filling out the action form. You will see a blue link on the “Action Center” page that if clicked on, brings you to a third-party website. On this website, you can send a letter directly to the entity to voice your concerns.
- If you would like to be updated about new records uploaded to ARLO for a specific entity, you can enter your email address and press the “>” button in the “Receive email updates” section. You will find this section right below the overview, animals used, records, media, lab details, experiments, and action center tabs on the left-hand side.
- If you run into any problems while browsing an entity’s page, you can click “! Report a problem” on the bottom left corner of the entity page. The link is to the right of the red exclamation point. Once you click on the “Report a Problem” link, you can describe the problem you have encountered and submit it so that the Rise for Animals team can tackle the issue ASAP.

- At the top of the “Browse Labs” page, you can search for a specific entity or geographic region you are interested in. You can enter the name of a specific entity in the “Enter name of lab…” search bar or the town, city, or state of your choice in the “Enter a location…” search bar. Once you have filled out your desired search terms, click the blue search button to see the results.
- You can also narrow your search by lab type, species, and USDA pain category. Below “Browsing results,” you will see two categories with pull-down options: “Lab Type” and “Species.” By clicking on the downwards arrow on each tab, you can select a specific type of entity and species you are looking for. On the right-hand side of these two tabs, you will see an “Experiment” category. By clicking on a box to the left of one of the four pain categories listed, you can narrow your search by the USDA’s pain categorization of animal experiments. Once you have selected the criteria of your search, you can organize the results by clicking on the downward arrow of the “Sort by” tab above and to the right of the “Experiment” section. If you are looking for the most current records, you can click “Recent Records” and the most recent records will appear at the top of the results list. If you are searching for a general geographic area and want to find the entities closest to the area specified, you can choose sort by “Nearest.” If you would prefer the results to be categorized alphabetically or reversed alphabetically instead, you can select “A-Z” or “Z-A.” As soon as you enter or select criteria in any of these tabs, results will generate. You can make the results as broad or as narrow as you’d like. You can find new results at any time by altering any of the criteria on the “Browse Labs” page.
- Once you have finished entering or selecting the criteria for your search, you can browse the results by scrolling down below the “Browsing results” section. You will see specific entities that match your search terms. While browsing the results, you will see 1) the name of each entity, 2) its APHIS identification number, 3) the lab type/sector, 4) the number of records on file for the entity, 4) the number of Animal Welfare Act protected animals used by the entity in the most recent year, 5) the Animal Welfare Act protected species used by the entity in the most recent year, and 6) the entity’s address.
